Marshall County Approves Ballot Question for a June 6 Referendum to Fund Courthouse Updates

Marshall County, SD – The Board of County Commissioners voted unanimously to place a bond referendum question to fund the addition and expansion of the Marshall County Courthouse at their meeting on April 11, 2023. The special election will be held on June 6, 2023.

The ballot question will ask voters to support a $5 million bond referendum to fund repairs and renovations to the existing courthouse and a courthouse addition.

The Board of County Commissioners has been researching how best to invest in the courthouse for the past year. A comprehensive facility assessment was completed to assess the overall condition of the building. The results of that study as well as the need to redesign space to better serve the public led to the proposed plan. The updated and new space will add needed offices for the Sheriff and E911 Dispatch departments, improve accessibility, create private, secured hallways to move inmates through the building, and preserve the courthouse’s rich history and celebrate the facility’s heritage.

The County Board is hosting several information sessions to share information on the proposed project.  Dates and times of these meetings will be published in the coming weeks.
